Women's Qualifiers

Women’s Qualifiers

As usual, men’s qualifiers ran really early in the morning (for those of us in the US), and women’s started at a much more reasonable hour, so I was actually able to watch most of them. Now IFSC has live feed replays available, so if you want you can watch men’s and women’s as well.

The women’s field was large enough to require two qualification groups, meaning they set two sets of 5 quali problems and divided the field in two. Top 10 scores in each group advanced to semis, so 20 climbers total (barring ties) will advance.

Here are the advancing climbers in both fields:

Great job to all the women! We are especially proud of our own Alex Puccio, who once again is atop the heap, and of our good friends, British boulderers Shauna Coxsey and Mina Leslie-Wujastyk! We are also glad to see Mina Markovic looking strong and healthy; with a field like this, everyone will have to be at their best to make finals. Good luck girls!

Many strong climbers, including Australian James Kassay (who just flashed a V13 in Fontainebleau), didn’t make it through to semis. The most surprising miss, of course, was this guy, number 11:

Kilian Fischhuber is one of the best male Bouldering World Cup competitors ever, and is currently ranked #1 in the world. He won the Bouldering World Cup two weekends ago in Millau, France. He rarely misses making finals, much less making semifinals, though in 2011 he took 23rd in Vienna, Austria, and in 2012 he took 21st in Germany. Hopefully this is just a once-a-season flub and he’ll be back to form next comp.

Speaking of back to form, we are pleased to see Slovenian Klemen Becan atop his group results, and also to see Sean McColl back in semis. The field looks strong, most of the semifinalists have been in finals at least once, so it will be exciting to see how things shake out tomorrow.
