IFSC Bouldering World Cup 2013 #4 – Log Dragomer – Finals

Mina and Jan in finals

Hometown favorite (and last year’s winner of this event) Mina Markovic and Jan Hojer in finals

The finals problems looked both powerful and technical. Most, like Women’s 2 above, seemed very concerned with aesthetics. Balance was a must, as were high heels and toes, and on Men’s 2, a dropknee toehook. Attempts were fun to watch, and I definitely recommend watching the replay if you didn’t get to see the comp:

Anna Stöhr for her 4th straight gold this season.

Sorry in advance for repeating this pun, but early on in finals the announcer said:

“A Stöhrm is coming.” (Game of Thrones, anyone?)

…and despite the horrible pun, he was right. Once again Anna dominated the comp, and she’s so far dominated the season. This comp she was the only person to send the first 3 finals so she didn’t even have to send the last final to win, which is good, because she wasn’t able to figure it out. She did have to get bonus first go on the last final, and she managed it, so she won. Had she missed bonus first go and then not sent, Melissa Le Neve would have won. Mina Markovic flashed the last final, but it wasn’t enough to put her on the podium. Shauna did it 2nd go and it earned her the bronze medal. Akiyo didn’t do either of the first 2 finals, then was the only person to flash the third and she did the 4th second go.

Men’s Finals

Sean McColl (CAN) for his first ever Bouldering World Cup Gold

Sean McColl (CAN) for his first ever Bouldering World Cup Gold

Sean had a great event after barely not making finals in Kitzbuhel, where he finished 7th. In this comp Sean went:

This is a pretty nice set of results. Clearly the first qualifier gave him some trouble (apparently it was a jump problem that thwarted many competitors), but he kept it together and sent, then continued on to crush the rest of the qualifiers round. Only 2 people managed to climb all 4 semifinals–Cedric Lachat and Jan Hojer. Several climbers managed 3 tops and a bonus in the semifinal round, and finalists came down to attempts. Sean’s two flashes and 2nd go send above are what kept him in 5th place after semis and put him in the final round, and in finals his smooth climbing put him in his first gold medal in an IFSC Bouldering World Cup. Great job Sean!

Jan Hojer came in second. After 6 tries to figure out the bottom Jan crushed #3, the final that gave everyone trouble but still got done. Sean did it 3rd go, and 3rd place finisher Dmitrii Sharafutdinov did it 5th go. Nobody else finished it. Everyone did #1, nobody did #2, and only Sean did #4, and he flashed it. So that was the comp. Congratulations to Jan on his first Bouldering World Cup silver medal and his second podium (he got bronze in Vail last year).
